How Problogger Inadvertently Gave Me 359 Headline Ideas

You’ve heard this before – grab your reader’s attention with the headline; you only have a second or two and then they are gone.

This is even more important when you write headlines for Internet savvy users (bloggers) who have become used to quickly scanning for information.

And it’s even more important if you submit your article to either article directories, blog contests, or other websites, where content is submitted by readers.

Since there will be many links, you MUST make your headline stand out from the crowd.

I have been following Problogger’s ”31 Days to Building a Better Blog” project and, at the time of writing this post, 359 readers have submitted tips.

As I read some of the tips, I began to wonder what makes me click on some of them.

1. I am interested in this information right now (WordPress tips, link building, pagerank)

2. The headline grabbed my attention

I realized that ”31 Days to Building a Better Blog” is not only a valuable resource for blogging tips, but also a great resource for headlines.

Here are some of the headlines that grabbed my attention:

1. Lessons I Learned …

2. How to use … to …

3. Top 7 Mistakes …

4. 10 Ways to …

5. Market Your … / Not Your …

With these ideas I have now expanded my headlines.txt 😉 file to include at least 20 more headlines.

The key to getting good headline ideas is to become more aware of you what you actually click on (don’t just react impulsively) and make a quick note in your headlines.txt file.

Of course, this doesn’t apply only to the above mentioned list of 359 headlines, but also when you scan various RSS feeds and other sources with many headlines.
