I typically mention a few nice things about their site and then suggest a link exchange. If they agree, then in the second email I just simply ask if they could link to certain URL (homepage or internal page) with “this link text”.

I never had any problems with that. Most people know what this is about and if they don’t, they just simply obey.

Hi Tomaz, my name is Joe and I came to know you from Griz’s site…I have a question though, how do we suggest the webmaster to link us with the anchor text we want? How best to put it so as not to raise any curious question from them?

One thing to avoid in link exchange emails or any other business deals is to talk about YOUR benefits or goals.

“In order to increase the ranking of my site…”

No one cares about the rankings of your site, Mirsad. And no one will help you get better rankings especially if they see you as their competitor.

Everyone is only interested in THEMSELVES. Here’s what you could say:

“Since my site is getting more traffic and my visitors are always looking for more soccer info, I thought about recommending your blog. You do a great job of posting fresh and interesting ideas about soccer so I am confident that my visitors would appreciate your blog.”

And then continue explaining how to exchange links, where you’ll put their link and what you’d appreciate in return…
