5 Myths About Google Penalization

There are all sorts of penalization myths going around and I thought I’d share my views about them. Just using the word “myths” should give you the first hint what they really are. ;)

Here are the most common myths of why Google and other search engines might penalize your site:

1.Will Google penalize me if I link to non-related sites?

No, unless you link to porn or sites that spread malware and other crap. The Internet is a World Wide Web which means that websites interlink with each other in many different ways.

If you write about your topic you’ll link most of the times to sites that are related to your topic – since you want your visitors to learn more. Read more

Thoughts On Press Releases And Yahoo Directory

I got a few questions from a reader on Press Releases and Yahoo Directory and here are my thoughts on those questions…

Press Releases

> What kind of website do they work best for?
Press releases in reality work best for companies that release a new product or a service. These press releases are then picked up by other sites and journalists and that creates a lot of buzz.

For a normal SBI site, the press releases are really not that powerful. All you get in most cases is one link from a trusted site.

> When is it a good time to consider writing one?  If you don’t use them or like the idea of them, why?
> How do you write one?  What information is needed in one to get the best impact?
> Who have you used or recommended?  I have heard of www.prweb.com but would like to know from someone who has used them how they work and if it is worth the investement. Read more

My SBI Barcelona Conference Presentation

I’ve attended the first European SBI Conference in Barcelona from 21st to 25th of September 2009 where I also had a presentation about keyword research, optimization of pages and the importance of links.

You can download my presentation here and here’s what I shared with each slide …

1.    Choosing a niche (Slide 2)
When you’re choosing a niche you need to assess whether there is enough demand for the keywords so that in the long term your site will get lots of traffic. My definition of lots of traffic is over 1000 daily visitors.

Based on my experience, you need at least 3000 total daily searches for top 100 keywords found through the free Wordtracker tool. If you go for too many, you may have too much competition so a good number to aim for is between 3000 and 8000 daily searches. Read more

Struggling with Traffic? Then This Is The Most Important Post You’ll Ever Read

If you’re not getting enough traffic to your site, then in 99% of cases, you’re missing the key factor in getting better search engine rankings – LINKS!

I visit the SBI forums daily and every day there is someone asking for a site review and complaining about low traffic.

And EVERY time I check their sites, I see the same thing; almost 0 incoming links or having some links but they’re coming from low quality sites.

Somehow, somewhere the most important information on how to get lots of free search engine traffic got lost.

So here it is: In order to rank high for a certain keyword in search engines like Google, Yahoo and Live, your keyword most have good demand, not too much competition and LINKS pointing to it.

Ideally, the link’s anchor text includes your keyword or a slight variation of it. These links should come from quality websites (and pages!) where the quality can be determined by high pagerank and high Alexa rating.

This is it. This is the most important information about getting free traffic. EVERYTHING else is less important. Read more

1. Why did you decide for SBI?

I first heard about SBI in 1999 when I bough Ken’s hardcover “Make Your Site Sell” book on how to build a website. I signed up to his newsletter all the way back in 2000 and have been on it since, but only eventually gave in a little over a year ago to sign up :)

In the meantime I ran a personal site called mariusbakken.com. It did well but I wanted a more business type approach to building a website. So I finally decided for the SBI solution when I had some time to follow that idea. Read more
