Two Or Three Google Adsense Ads Per Page?

I recently received a message inside my Google Adsense account from the Optimization team. Here’s what it said:

Google adsense message from Optimization team

I was quite surprised that the Adsense team actually analyzes individual accounts that accurately. I don’t think this was an algorithm that was just checking my site and found 2 ads per page instead of 3.

I received this suggestion only for one of my sites – and that’s the one in a high paying niche with reasonable traffic (around 2000 daily visitors).

And if the Google Adsense team personally contacts you and “strongly suggests” ;) that you do something new for your site, then you better do it.

I added the third ad per page ONLY on 5 T2 pages of that site – just to test it.

Those 5 extra ads increased my earnings of that site by 7%.

I will now ad the third Adsense ad on all T2 pages and see how that affects the earnings of the whole site.

As you probably know, the more ads you have per page, the less the bottom ones pay.

So I think that this approach (3 ads per page) works well only in high paying Adsense niches where there are also lots of advertisers – which means that the payout of the third ad will not be that low.

What are your experiences with the number of Adsense ads per page and have you also received a message from the Optimization team in your Google Adsense account?

I got the same message for my Glacier site. I haven’t added any additional advertisements though because, for the most part, I’d rather someone click through an affiliate link than an adsense advertisement.

Where did you put the third ad, Tomaz?

    Perry,

I put the third ad below the main article and above the links to T3 articles.

    Hey Tomaz,
I’m pretty sure it’s an automatically generated email. I received a similar message and, although it’s customized very well, you can still tell it’s algorithmically created.

Nevertheless, it does offer some great feedback and tips. It’s really cool to see you had a 7% earnings increase. I’ve noticed a nice earnings increase this month despite not doing anything differently. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I am sure the message is automatic. I received the same message, except for number of pages, while my site only has one single ad per page.

I haven’t received an email like that, but noticed a dip in adsense revenue during the middle of the month when they were changing the layout of the 336×280 and other formats.

The new format shows truncated URL’s and doesn’t look as professional on my site at the moment. Hope they fix it soon.

I received an email from Google this month, informing me that over 50% of my ads were not set to show both graphic and text ads. They encouraged me to make that change. I changed about about 20 of them. I’m still evaluating the results.

I received an Email from Google inviting me to sit down with one of their optimization experts for 30 minutes to review my sites. So, I went down and met with her. She, too, suggested to add the three units per page, which I had done on a lot of my pages already. She also suggested changing the URL color from the green to black or dark gray so it blended more with my site. Since the URL change would only take a few seconds, I opted to check that first. I changed the color of the URLs from green to dark gray at the top of the month and my CTR is up .75% this month. I will make more changes at the beginning of next month. She also suggested added “search” to the “architecture of my site.” Meaning add search to every page at the top of all my pages. This will be the next thing I test with my top five earning pages. She suggested that I test things for at least three weeks. I like to just do one thing at a time so I can see what’s going on.

    Tomaz,
They sent me the same message and also one about changing to image ads. But in my testing, image ads do not do as well as text-only ads.

I am considering adding a third ad in the right or left column, but that would place the ads very close to my subheaders and links, which are also blue.

Didn’t they disable ad serving to your site for a few days last year because of the same color fonts near the ads? How did you fix that? I may have to change my layout colors before I can test a third ad per page.

I have a feeling these messages are auto-generated because it wasn’t from any one person at Google, just “Optimization Team”.

I also received this message, which suggested I ad two or more ads to my stain removal site since at the time I only had one ad on each page.

I have added a second ad to some of the higher CPC keyword pages, and am evaluating how it goes.

I do seem to have had some increase, but I have also had an increase in traffic so it is hard to figure out which thing is effecting the increase more.

I have tried adding more adsense but it always diluted the clickthru $$ so much that I have stuck with 1. I use an adnetwork for the rest of my adspace which generally brings me better $$ for the remaining adspace. For now at least :)
